In July 2012, I was diagnosed with Stage 4B Thymoma, which
has a very poor prognosis. As would be for anyone, this was
devastating for my family and I. I am a 37 year old husband and
a father to 3 boys, Billy 17, Christopher 3 and Cody 1, how
could I be dying of Cancer? My wife and I went to appointment
after appointment only to be told chemotherapy and
"watchful waiting" was the only treatment available for me.
This chemotherapy has been the same for the past 10 years, no
changes have been made. After spending many sleepless nights
researching and reading about my disease, I realized that the old
standby treatment of just chemotherapy was not for me.
My wife and I decided to seek out a second opinion, and this is where
our journey took a dramatic turn. We decided the Johns Hopkins
Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland was the best place to get our second
opinion, it was relatively close and ranked #3 in the nation for cancer
hospitals. With the help of my brother-in law and his family and
neighbor, we were put in contact with a doctor willing to listen and look at my charts. In less than a week I had an appointment with Dr. Malcolm Brock. Dr. Brock sat and spoke with us and explained everything we had already researched, however he had a different treatment plan in mind. Dr. Brock told us that my best chance was to go to France for surgery!! France?? for surgery?? My wife, his protege` and I sat there stunned; France? Dr. Brock then did the unthinkable and called France and spoke to the surgeon, Dr. Elie Fadel. Dr. Fadel told him he would be more than happy to look at my case, review the charts, and scans and let us know if I was a good surgical candidate. Dr. Fadel then asked Dr. Brock to accompany us to France to assist with the surgery.
My wife and I left Dr. Brock's appointment and for the first time in months we had HOPE. We were unsure how we would be able to get it done, however we felt our encounter with Dr. Brock was meant to be. We truly feel there is a higher power looking over us and guiding us on this crazy adventure, France is where I need to be. We had been blessed with our "Guardian Angel" Dr. Brock, and with his help, knowledge and expertise we hope to change the face of cancer treatments here in the United States.
We need your help. My wife has been busy trying to convince our health insurance carrier to cover my surgery, however we are running into many roadblocks. If the insurance does not come thru, we need to raise enough money to send my wife and I to France, so that I may have a chance to grow old with my wife and to watch my boys continue to learn and grow.
We are asking our family, friends, neighbors, co-workers and anyone who is able, to donate to our cause, www. Euros4Merv.org it is our hope to raise enough money to cover our costs to go France and get the surgery I need.
We cannot begin to thank everyone who has helped us with our kids, house, kind words, jobs, dinners and most of all prayers. The generosity that we have received in the past few months is amazing and we are truly blessed to have so much love that surrounds us. We appreciate anything you can do, donate, send a card, send a text, email or even just a prayer.
